Discover The Barn

The Historic Barn

The barn at 925 Old Valley Road, rebuilt in 1822 after a 1820 fire, is a cornerstone of Solitude Farm's agricultural legacy. Part of the Jacobs Homestead (National Register-listed), it features original stone walls with charcoal remnants from the blaze.

Evolution and Features

Early History

Built c. 1750; served Jacobs' farming operations.

Later Uses

Steam dairy barn under Kates; pig barn for Church Farms School (1950s-1980s) with concrete additions.

Challenges

Abandoned for decades; septic system bifurcated by property lines.

Hollenshead Renovation

Ongoing project includes repointing stone, roof replacement, and integration with gardens. Plans for cisterns underneath for rainwater harvesting.

Proposals aim to reunify with 901 for cohesive preservation, turning it into a space for horticultural study and community events.
